The forest was not Jensen's first choice to go traipsing around in when his body was rebelling against the change Jared convinced Jensen to accept. The ground was rocky and uneven and Jensen was constantly tripping over every little obstacle in his path. At least Danneel knew where to go, and they were sticking to a dirt path, and weren't wandering in the middle of the forest, and climbing trees, or something crazy that Jensen would rather die than do.

“Where are we going?” Jensen managed to choke out some time later. His throat felt like it was on fire. His stomach was doing nauseating somersaults, and his legs were so weak he could barely walk. Jared supported him, with an arm across Jensen's shoulder. The werewolf patiently helped Jensen maneuver around tree roots and over rocks. Jensen knew there was no way he'd be able to follow the werewolves along the forest trail if it wasn't for Jared's reassuring weight and support.

“We are on our way to Mark's lair.” Danneel answered. She shot Jared a worried look. “Are you sure Jensen can do this? It appears the change will begin any time now.”

Jared snarled at Danneel. “I am monitoring Jensen. The change is at least 90 minutes away, if not longer. We have time.”

Danneel smiled uncertainly but didn't feel the need to argue. “It is not much further. We need only to climb a small hill and the cave is right there.” Danneel rolled up her sleeve and checked her watch. “I am a couple minutes late reporting in. I hope Mark is too preoccupied to notice.” She motioned for the small group to follow her.

Danneel was a liar. The small hill was an insurmountable mountain, and Jensen, after losing his footing twice because his legs were shaking too hard for him to walk, let alone scale a mountain, sat down with his head between his legs, and refused to move. Jared knelt next to him, and Jensen cried out in surprise when the world tilted alarmingly for a moment.

“I'll carry you little one.” Jared said, amused.

“Stop calling me that.” Jensen grumbled. He enjoyed the sensation of being carried, and relaxed back in Jared's arms, his body relaxing as much as the pain would allow it in Jared's arms. Jared caught up with Danneel and Katie in seconds, despite Jensen's added weight.

It was going to be weird to be so strong, once he was changed. Jensen thought.

The cave entrance, large but well hidden behind the bushes growing in front of it, gaped large and ominous. Jensen shivered looking at it. Jared set Jensen down gently and Jensen took the silent hint and stood behind the protection Jared's body offered. Katie stood to Jared's left.

Danneel smiled nervously. “I'll go in first, and you three can follow a way's behind.” Danneel disappeared inside the cave and was gone for maybe fifteen seconds before she reappeared, her face twisted with terror.

“Get down! Now!” She cried. She threw herself on top of Katie, and the two women went down in a tangle of limbs. Jared blurred, he moved so quickly, as he tackled Jensen to the ground. Jared's massive body shielding Jensen's from whatever was coming.

A large fireball flew above where they had been moments before, and hit the tree behind them. The tree blew apart, spraying the werewolf's with splinters and leaves. A tree branch missed Danneel's leg by inches.

“What the hell?” Jensen asked, his voice muffled by Jared's body.

“It's Mark! He saw me and started attacking!” Danneel cried. She sounded close to tears, even as she knelt above Katie and helped the woman to her feet. Jared did the same with Jensen. Jensen swayed and decided kneeling was a better option then standing. Jared spared him a moments glance and touched the top of his head before he turned his attention to Danneel and Katie.

“What should we do?”

Danneel shrugged helplessly. “I have no idea. I really believed he wouldn't know I was bringing you three with me ... I was wrong, I'm so sorry.”

Katie hugged Danneel. “It's all right, we don't blame you.” Jared looked like he disagreed, but one look at Katie's face encouraged him to keep his mouth shut.

“We can change forms and try sneaking in that way.” Jared suggested, after it became obvious Danneel was too distraught to contribute any ideas.

“I suppose so.” Katie said doubtfully. “It's all we got.” The three werewolf's turned at the sound of footsteps from the direction of the cave entrance. Danneel's eyes grew large and frightened. “That's Mark!”

“There's no reason to get all prettied up for me.” A mocking male voice said. “I'll kill you all no matter what form you take!”

With a snarl of pure rage, Katie charged at the man. He laughed, delighted, and with a wave of his hand, Katie was thrown back and on top of Danneel. She lay still, stunned, before she regained her footing. Jared snarled but made no move towards the Mage.

“Now now young lady,” the Mage chastised, like Katie was a naughty child, “there was no reason to attack me.”

“You tried to kill us with a fireball!” Katie yelled. Her face was red with anger, and she looked one second away from loosing her cool. Jensen had never seen her so angry.

Mark waved his hand dismissively. “That was for that bitch Danneel. I was unaware she had company.”

“Misha...I did everything you asked of me. Please tell me you didn't harm him.” Danneel pleaded brokenly.

Mark's voice was full of scorn. “He will be dead soon enough.” A smile spread across his face as Danneel crumpled to to the rocky ground. “You will all feel pain and loss soon enough.”

“Why?” Katie asked. “Why are we to suffer? Jared and I have never seen you before.”

When Mark spoke his voice was burred and gravelly, “All werewolve's must die. You ruined my life just as surely as I'll ruin yours.” He took a deep breath and began to speak. “Twenty years ago my mother and I, and two teenage girls were captured by a werewolf. For four days I lay tied up, hungry and thirsty while the werewolf raped and murdered my mother and the teenagers. I prayed for mercy and for help to come, but no one did. No werewolf tracked us down and saved us. I was all alone and they were dead.

“The werewolf saved me for last. I stared at my mother's dead and ravaged body, and an anger such as I never had felt before welled up inside me. Just as the werewolves fingers touched my skin, a spell popped into my head, and I fried that fucker to a crisp, and the ropes binding me burned away.
“I ran away that day, vowing I'd get my revenge. I'd kill as many werewolves as I could, I'd make them suffer. I'd take any mated werewolves I could get my hands on and I'd make them scream and cry and feel my anguish before they'd die, every last one of them.”

Mark laughed, long and insane before he continued.“It took me decades to get my magick under control, but once I did, I searched for a wolf pack. I found yours, and easily, with my concealment charms, worked my way inside the community. I found your man alone and unprotected one night, and I took him. It's delicious irony that you were accused of killing your own mate.”

It took Katie several moments before she could speak. She ignored Mark's comments concerning Chad. “I'm sorry that happened to you, Mark, but killing us won't take your pain away.”

Mark's laugh was unfettered and crazy. “I know that! I don't care! I want you all to suffer! All of you!” Mark pointed a finger at Jensen, burning up and shaking on the ground. “I'm going to take your bitch and make him scream and bleed while you watch! He chose to chain himself to a wild, savage beast, and he must suffer the consequences!”

“You will not touch him!” Jared said, his voice like acid, dangerous and corrosive. “I will kill you before you can get close enough to do him harm!”

“I should put him out of his misery! Keep him from changing into a mindless beast!”

“We end this now.” Jared snarled, his voice sharp like glass. Katie shifted in an instant, followed by Jared. Danneel followed a few seconds after Katie and Jared. Jensen gathered himself enough to crawl a distance from the danger zone. If he'd thought his legs could support him, he'd have gone down the hill. Breaking his neck wasn't ideal, and though Jared had said his body would heal once he changed, he didn't want to put a broken neck to the test.

Jared howled, long and dangerous. His body shook and glowed for a fraction of a second, and then the light faded. Jensen thought that might be Jared going into Bersker mode or whatever werewolves called it. Katie and Danneel snapped their jaws in warning, their eyes fixed on Mark.

The Mage stood alone. He seemed to radiate fury and malice. He chanted and threw a large fireball at the werewolves. All three sprang away. Jared and Danneel rushed Mark, but, with a laugh and a wave of his hand, he flung them back. Another fireball sailed towards the wolfs, and was summarily dodged.

Mark began chanting, and a vortex of air opened up around him. The werewolves paced nervously outside the circle of the wind. The hair on the back of Jensen's neck stood up, and electricity seemed to crackle in the air. A bolt of lightning just barely missed Katie. She howled and backed away. A second bolt of lightning slammed into Jared. He yipped and collapsed to the ground. Mark finished chanting and the wind blew viscously and all three wolves blown away from the Mage. Danneel immediately climbed to her feet. Katie got up on shaky legs. Jared didn't stir.

The Mage seemed drained of all magick, as he stood hunched over and panting. Danneel and Katie were on him in a second. The two wolves got in a bite each, before Mark recovered and sent them flying. Both recovered, but their legs were shaking badly. Jared was still down for the count.

“Jared, get up, please.” Jensen whispered. Jensen tried to stand, but his body hurt too badly. He collapsed the instant he tried to stand. His skin felt three sizes too small, and it was difficult to breathe. Jensen hoped his body wasn't about to start the change, because Jared was unconscious behind Mark, and he didn't want to die of a heart attack because the pain was too great and his mate was unavailable to knock him out.

“You werewolves are pathetic.” Mark spat. “I grow tired of this. Once my magick is fully recharged, I am going to put you all out of your misery.” The Mage didn't notice Jared stirring, or changing back to his human form. Jared, quiet as the dead, got to his feet and grabbed a large, jagged piece of wood, and started towards the Mage.

“You speak too much and let your defenses down.” Jared said. He shoved a tree branch through his stomach. Mark jolted as if he'd been electrocuted by his own lightning, and blood dripped from his open mouth. The Mage collapsed into the dirt, body twitching like he was being touched with a live wire.

Katie and Danneel phased back. Their eyes showed their remorse. Jared alone appeared unmoved. His attention focused on Jensen with alarming alacrity. He left the two females to watch the Mage while he moved over to Jensen.

“Are you all right?” Jared asked, breathless with worry.

Jensen's laughed mirthlessly. “I feel like I'm burning up from the inside. I was worried I was going to start changing while you were knocked out.”

Jared nuzzled Jensen's cheek, and kissed Jensen quickly. “Never, little one.”

“Seriously, stop that. I hate that nickname.” Jensen groused.

“He is dead.” Katie said remorsefully. “I should be sad, for his life was a tragedy, yet, he kidnapped my mate. I just want Chad back.”

“I want Misha.” Danneel waved impatiently for the werewolf's to follow. Jared scooped Jensen into his arms and followed the two females into the cave. The damp walls were lined with torches, which afforded Jensen enough light to see. The ceiling was so low the werewolves had to bend over to walk; Jared was was hunched over so much Jensen's elbows and feet dragged along the dirt and rocks. In no time at all, they arrived into a large room, spacious enough they no longer needed to bend over to walk.

The room was barren except for a hastily dug fire pit, near a crack in the wall to let out smoke, and a sleeping bag. Two men and a woman were bound and gagged and laying in a far corner like an after thought. Danneel and Katie let out twin cries of joy and dashed across the room. Jared reluctantly let Jensen stand, and Jensen watched through teary eyes, as Katie and Danneel untied their mates and covered their faces in kisses.

Danneel recovered first. She untied the woman, obviously Sophia, and helped her to her feet. She then helped Misha over to Jared and Jensen. Her face fairly glowed with happiness. Misha bowed formally before Jared. He was unsteady on his feet and Danneel kept touching him gently, like she couldn't stop and she needed the contact for comfort.

“Thank you.” Misha said, his voice low and rusty from disuse. “Thank you for saving me, and protecting my mate while I was unable to.”

Jared shifted uncomfortably. “You're welcome, it was the least I can do.”

“Where will you go now?” Jensen asked curiously. It hurt to speak, but he was curious all the same. Jared rubbed his back soothingly.

“If it is all right with you five, Misha and I would like to pay respects to your pack leader. It is not enough to thank you three for all the help you gave to me and my mate especially after I tried to kill you Jared.”

Jared waved his hand dismissively. “I understand why you did everything. I would have done the same if our roles were reversed and Jensen's life hung in the balance.”

“I think it is a good idea, you and Misha coming with us to our pack.” Katie said. She walked slowly over to their small group, Chad a dead weight on her shoulder. Sophia hovered nervously behind Katie's shoulder, ready to assist. Chad looked worse than Misha; his face was covered in dirt and there was an impressive bruise blossoming on his right cheek. He was skin and bones, his eyes glazed with pain.

“Chad!” Jensen cried, unable to keep quiet. He lurched forward and wrapped his arms around Chad. His best friend hugged Jensen just as fiercely.

“Jen,” Chad whispered brokenly. “Jensen.”

“I thought you were dead. You left me!” Jensen said. Tears he'd been holding back since Katie told him Chad was missing, slid down his cheeks, as he finally cried. Chad rocked him before he pulled away. Katie drew Chad back into her arms. Jared did the same with Jensen.

Chad looked at Jensen blearily. “Well fuck me. You're about to go through the change? So Jared's your mate?” Jensen nodded sheepishly. “Never saw that coming. Welcome to the family man.”

“Glad to be here.” Jensen said. And it was true.

“Let's get out of here.” Danneel said abruptly. “This place gives me the creeps.”

“Where to? Back to Maine and our pack?” Katie asked Jared. “If we're leaving today then we have a lot to do.”

Jared shook his head. “We're going back to Jensen's apartment to rest. Jensen is about ready to start the change, so I'm going to put him to sleep. While Chad and Misha recuperate, and Jensen has some time to grow accustomed to being a werewolf, I'm going to wrap up some loose ends so Jensen can join us. Does anyone disagree?”

The werewolves unanimously agreed. Jensen did too. Kind of. “You still owe me big time. You're lucky I love you and I'm willing to do this.”

Jared kissed Jensen, long and lingering. “Yeah, I'm lucky you do love me after I treated you so badly.” He kneaded Jensen's shoulders, even as two fingers pressed against Jensen's forehead. “I love you too.”

The world went black.

“I want to give this back to you.” Jensen said. He sat down next to Chad on the soft grass. Chad's eyes widened at the sight of the signed Iggy Pop record Jensen held in his hands. “I've been holding onto this for far too long, Chad.”

Chad's hands shook as he took the record back. He stared at it for a long time, before he set it down beside him. He smoothed a nervous hand through his hair; his eyes were confused when they met Jensen's.

“I figured you'd have thrown everything of mine away, Jensen. I vanished with only a note. After nearly twelve years of friendship I left without saying good bye.”

“I hated you for a long time.” Jensen confessed. “I couldn't understand why you'd leave what we planned together behind.” Jensen laughed. “But now, mated with Jared, I can understand why you'd sacrifice everything. If I'd met Jared first, I would have left with him.”

“It's both amazing and scary what you'd give up for your mate.” Chad said wryly.

“I gave up my career with the Sakorski firm.” Jensen said. “My boss was furious and he threatened to sue me. Jared paid him a late night visit and he dropped the lawsuit. Jared was a little bit too smug about scaring the crap out of my former boss.”

Chad laughed and clapped Jensen on the back. He sobered quickly. “Katie almost had to restrain me a couple of times because I was so determined to come back for you. It didn't matter that you weren't a werewolf; you're my best friend, and my family. I wanted you with me, even if I was going to outlive you.”

Jensen blinked back tears. “Katie apologized for taking you away.” Chad seemed shocked. “She realized she handled things badly after you were changed. She said you needed me during that time, and it hurt you more than it helped you to keep me away.”

Chad smiled. “She's an amazing woman, I'm lucky to have her.” He pulled Jensen into a one-armed hug. “I don't need to worry about outliving you. You're going to live centuries with me and Katie by your side.”

“Lucky me.” Jensen said sarcastically.

“I like your mating mark, by the way,” Chad said randomly. “An open flame. That's nice. It suits you.”

Jensen traced the raised lines of the mark on his neck. “It's really interesting to see the marks the mating bite left on other werewolf's necks. I especially like the four leaf clover our pack leader has. Danneel and Misha have a flower petal. Yours and Katie's is simple but plain. I like it.”

“Speaking of Katie...there she is! My lovely mate!” Chad cried enthusiastically as she sat down beside Chad. Katie blushed, but she smiled at Chad, pleased.

“Jensen, Jared's looking for you.” Katie said absently.

“We have a mental bond, he could have just sad it telepathically.” Jensen muttered.

“You naturally filter out anything that's not your own thoughts. Until Jared breaks you of that habit, other werewolves are going to be your go-between.” She patiently explained.

Jensen scowled. Chad's eyes lit up. “Maybe you can learn with our daughter!”

Jensen sputtered. “What?”

Katie swatted Chad on the back of the head. “You ruined the surprise.” She paused dramatically. “I'm pregnant!”

Jensen embraced Katie and Chad. “Congratulations!”

“That's why Katie and I went out the night I was kidnapped. We were fighting about having a baby. I wasn't ready....but now, after everything that happened, I think I can do this. I know I can, I want to.”

“You took a lot of risks tracking me down while pregnant. And fighting with Mark was stupid.” Chad chastised.

Katie rolled her eyes, but she didn't disagree. “For you I would do anything, and you know that.” Jensen hugged Katie and Chad again, but left when they began to look at each other with smoldering eyes.

Jensen nodded at the werewolf's he passed. Mike and Tom waved energetically, from where they were collecting firewood for tonight's feast. He bowed at Jefferey Dean Morgan, his pack leader and Jeffery's mate, Allison Mack, a bubbly, charismatic blond haired woman.

And there was Jared, his mate. Jared's smile, wide and open, made butterflies flutter in his stomach. It was a feeling Jensen knew was never going to fade. Jensen moved into Jared's open arms, and inhaled the spicy, woodsy scent of his mate.

“Have I thanked you recently for officially becoming part of the pack?” Jared asked. His hands rubbed concentric circles on Jensen's back.

Jensen licked Jared's neck and grinned when Jared shivered. His big strong mate was like putty in his hands. He knew every sweet spot on Jared's body, had learned it over the last eight days since his change. Jared was an open book for Jensen, and it was an exhilarating feeling to hold such sway over a powerful creature like Jared.

“You did,” Jensen said absently, “And I'm glad I came with you; I'm glad we're mated. It didn't start out so well, but it sure as hell ended fantastically.” Jensen paused when Jared threaded fingers through his hair. “Did you know Katie and Chad are going to have a baby?”

Jared seemed pleased. “That's wonderful. It's the first child born in our pack in over a century. That must be part of the announcement our pack leader is going to make tonight. He and Allison are having a baby as well. Allison told me this morning. She's fairly bursting with happiness and couldn't keep quiet. Jeffery can't stop smiling, either.”

“So Katie and Chad's daughter is going to have someone to grow up with.” Jensen said with a smile. He was happy for not only his best friend, but also for Allison.

“Katie is having a daughter?” Jared asked.

Jensen shrugged. “She seemed certain.”

Jared kissed Jensen's neck and said “If Katie is so certain then I believe her.” Jensen moaned in agreement.

Jared drew back and kissed Jensen. His mouth was warm and inviting, and Jensen melted against Jared's chest.

Jared drew back reluctantly. Jared's hands traced Jensen's skin reverently.“I'm never going to get tired of kissing you.”

“I'm never going to get tired of being here with you. The pack is my family now, and this is my home. I'm going to have centuries with you, and it's still not going to be enough.” Jensen confessed.

“We'll make every minute count.” Jared grinned, and Jensen laughed outright as Jared changed into his wolf form. He ran forward a few paces, and turned and glanced at Jensen, in an open challenge.

Jensen closed his eyes and pictured a wolf in his mind, like Jared had taught him. He felt a curious tingling sensation all over his body and fiery pain that lasted for an instant. When he opened his eyes, he was on four legs, and the world around him was in sharp, painful focus.

Jared was by his side. He nipped Jensen's side hard, and the pain helped Jensen focus. Jared licked his face, and then Jared was off, running with long strides across the field.

Together, just as they would be for the centuries to come.

Wonderful story, love the fact that it was a werewolf one as well. So glad that everyone was alright in the end and that Katie was innocent all along like she claimed.
